I just downloaded and installed AdobeReader_enu-8.1.1-1.i486.rpm.

First anomaly, but not the one I intended to write about, is that it
identifies itself in its Help screen as Adobe Reader 7.0. The file
/opt/Adobe/Reader8/Reader/AcroVersion says 8.1.1

Real anomaly, which also happens with with its predecessor Acrobat Reader 7.

Print a page which was created iin letter format (8.5x11). Do not
check "expand small" or "shrink oversize". See by looking at
printed output or by saving to a file and examining the code in the PS
file that the output is placed on an A4-size sheet, which is about 0.7
inches longer than letter size, so the printing is displaced 0.7
inches upward on the page.

Now go to the File -> Print Setup page, see the paper size as: Width
8.50 Height 11.00.
Delete the 11.00, type in 11.00. Check OK. Now print again, and find
that the output is properly placed on the letter-size paper, or see
that the PS file is different in the code that determines the
placement of the image on the page. The gory details:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] tmp]$ diff print0.ps print1.ps

< %%CreationDate: 20:11:12 10/18/07
---
> %%CreationDate: 20:11:39 10/18/07

> 0.0 0.0 612.0 792.0 0.0 0.0 612.0 792.0 0 0 false false false false PDF begin
> PDFVars begin ASR end end

Note the numbers 595 842 are A4 size, and 612 792 are letter size, in PS points.

Acroread 5 did not have this problem.

It has taken me many months to figure out why sometimes printed PDF
was placed wrong on the page.
