Why aren't you putting a candidate in front of a real machine and giving
him a task instead? You'll get far more information.
Set him up on a clean install of Centos, Fedora, OpenSuse, <other
distro>, etc. and tell him to install/fix/configure something.
With virtualization, setting this up borders on trivial.
