Same here; I type much as you described before, and I usually have to look at the keyboard, but my average speed is upwards of 50wpm. I've attempted to learn how to type "for real," but I've been doing it this way for so long that an attempt to change my system invariably slows me down and frustrates me. I'm sure I could end up faster if I persisted with a more efficient method, but it's the initial slowdown that makes things difficult.

I don't like hjkl simply because I've become accustomed to using the
arrow keys.

I taught myself hjkl pretty easily by playing lots of Nethack at the console... :)
