I have noticed that everywhere in "downtown" Santee (basically, within 2 miles of Mission Gorge and Cuyamaca) that has wireless has the damnable Cingular-cum-AT&T "subscription required" wireless. It's something like $10 for a day of use or $40/mo recurring subscription. The one time I took my laptop with me when I took my car in for work has taught me that I should just leave it at home and bring a good book instead.

Thankfully the _good_ (independent) coffee shop near our house has free wireless.
