[snip r.e. conversion to DTV by 2/09] > "Most people don’t actually need to know anything. The switch won’t > affect sets with cable or satellite service." Yes, "people don't actually need to know anything" is exactly what they want. While there are some technical advantages, the consumer demand for this transition is almost completely lacking. The real motivation is control over what the consumer can and cannot time-shift and record. So what if you're paying for DTV with your taxes, so what it's your spectrum that's going to be auctioned to government friendly communication companies for bargain basement prices after the switch, so what if it's your battery powered portable TV that's going to be a piece of junk after February 2009, and who cares if your fair use copy rights are going bye-bye ? When the cable companies phase out analogue altogether (2011 ?), the MPAA will control the vertical, and the MPAA will control the horizontal.
