If I recall correctly the whole shift to digital TV started in...early
90's? I seem to remember hearing about it in high school and I graduated in
93. The Tivo wasn't even a sparkle in its inventors eye at the time much
less on the radar of media companies.
The transition is about advantages, and probably isn't something that
consumers would know they want. It's about the fact that a massive chunk
of the RF spectrum is eaten up with a very old signalling technology.
Forcing all TV to digital will free up a large portion of that for other
purpose.
This is actually the first time I've even heard anyone suggest there was
some kind of conspiracy behind the transition.
