Unfortunately the luminosity on my laptop screen has failed[1]. I am using an external monitor but I am not able to use my FC8 system to display to the external monitor, I am using Knoppix which works fine.

What tips or pointers should I track down to try to get the FC8 system to output to the external monitor?

TIA,

[1] the screen still receives the image from the system, which you can see if you get very close to the screen...

Then it's most likely that video is working fine. The problem then is that the backlight may be off. Try turning it on manually. To do that you'll need to find the proper commands for your laptop's Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) brand.

What video chip is in your laptop? Specifically the make (ati, nvidia, intel, via, sis, ???) and model.

Do you see anything in text mode when the system boots with Knoppix? With Fedora?

Does your external monitor support DDC (Display Data Channel)? If it was made in the last 10 years it should support it.

What video driver is being used by Knoppix? By Fedora? Look in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to find out. Also look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log to make sure they match up. The log file will also tell what is being detected and set by the video driver. Look for info about the external monitor being detected and activated.

I've found that with my laptop, the Xorg log file is mostly useless. This is mainly because things like switching displays and backlight control are now mostly controlled by the BIOS, ACPI, and eventually the kernel. Xorg has a reputation for being rather flaky at the moment on laptops. I think the move is to standardize all the stuff that is not unique to a specific video chipset into ACPI and the kernel itself.

Do you have access to the laptop remotely (ssh)? That will make it easier to mess with things.

I think F8's problems with laptop displays is more the fault of the kernel and ACPI rather than with the distribution. Isn't F8 using a newer kernel that most other distributions? There have been many significant changes in the last two or so kernel versions regarding ACPI (power, CPU, and LCD management).
