these two fit together nicely, but how are they protocols?

Also, SSL and GPG, other than having small amount of overlap in purpose,
and both making use of similar algorithms, are entirely unrelated.  For
that matter, ssh, which largely shared the same purpose as SSL is entirely
unrelated to SSL.
