I forgot to comment on video. I have used NVIDIA for years. I am a registered ATI and NVIDIA developer and have had experience with both in Linux (most recent experience is with NVIDIA).

That said, for the past year or more NVIDIA has increasingly dissappointed me with their Linux drivers. The last few times I've upgraded systems, X has broken to the point that it's taken me hours to fix it. The result has been days or weeks of system down time because I simply do not have the time to spend fscking around with a part of the OS that should "just work", instead of developing software to put food on the table.

Though this new system has an NVIDIA card in it (because it was built mainly with Windows game playing and development in mind), if I were to purchase a new Linux box, I would seriously look into an ATI card. Since AMD has purchased ATI, and they have opened up their specs and are embracing the OSS community, I believe that possibly there is now some Linux competition for NVIDIA.

Beyond that, I can't say any more since I do not currently own an ATI card. I can say that once the NVIDIA drivers are installed and configured, the NVIDIA cards are extremely good in Linux.
