After locating potential sources for marking pens, I decided to try
the P-Touch labeller. It took a fair amount of trimming with scissors
to make a single-character label small enough to stick to the micro-SD
card.

Results: There seems to be plenty of thickness clearance in the
micro-to-standard SD adapter and the MP3 player. It's a tight fit in
the USB adapter, but not impossibly so.

Side observation: the slot in the MP3 player is spring-loaded, and if
you aren't careful it will fling the micro card across the room while
you fumble to insert it.
