Maybe someone else will offer other suggestions, but I suspect this is a
case where you my wish to get one of those external usb/firewire HD's
for $100-160 and make a full dd copy of the quiescent filesystem (booted
from Knoppix, say).

I suspect the value of your system (bells & whistles, configured) may be
more than that of many users. So it's more than just saving your data, eh?
