I'm kind of short of disk space to keep the old OS in place until I know
the new one works.

I recommend just buying a new disk to replace the old one and then placing the old one in a safe place. I have done that with a laptop drive and desktop drives. Given how cheap drives are now you can get improved performance, lower power consumption and more storage space for a reasonable price. You'll also have an immediately available backup that is usable just by popping the drive back in the computer or you can stick it in an external USB case to periodically retrieve data or examine your changes. I still have a disk sitting around that has Red Hat 7 (not Fedora!) on it.
