Highest means the one with the biggest number of pixels.
Possibly your monitor can't cope with a refresh rate of 75Hz. That is
why I suggested setting the Knoppix control panel to 60Hz.

The Viewsonic spec sheet says it will do refresh rates as high as
85Hz. Nevertheless, since it is a LCD monitor and thus does not have
the flicker problem that CRT monitors have, there is no good reason
for choosing a refresh rate higher than 60Hz.

The Viewsonic Users Guide talks about the Auto Image Adjust button
(labeled Auto Set) and suggests that if that doesn't give a proper
image, lower the refresh rate to 60Hz.

Before trying this, does xrandr report any other lines with the
resolution 1280x1024 but different (lower) refresh rates? If I could
remember how to use xrandr to choose another display rate, I would try
to coach you through that. Perhaps Jim Sack is looking on.
