This is an after-effect of running grub-install and having it put
things in the wrong place. The extra directory and its contents are
not used.

The somewhat sketchy instructions found when invoking "$ info grub"
imply that the correct syntax is "default 0". The file as present in
RedHat-type systems says "default=0". Beats me.

5 days to the next InstallFest, January 10.
