Used transponders cost more than they are worth and transceivers can be a problem if not operational.Repair is available but getting harder to find.The transmitter cavity in the transponder can go bad and replacement is more than the unit is worth.For that reason the 40 year old KT-76 I sold was cheap because it is very likely on the edge of oblivion with each turn on.Transponders are tested every 2 years regardless of IFR or VFR operation.The pitot/static system and encoder are tested for accurracy for IFR cert. only.The VFR test doesn't care if the altimeter is correct or not.Your VFR.Tommy W.
