The VHF is in the vertical fin and the transponder antenna is right
behind the seat. Several feet separate them. However, the   coax cables
parallel each other.

How close is your VHF antenna to the transponder antenna? A harmonic
freq 
might be fooling your transponder into thinking it is being swept by a
radar 
beam....just guessing here.
