All wire has resistance, and if it has resistance, it drops a voltage, 
so if you have two devices connected to the same wire, then when one is 
taking current, the voltage at the point where the two devices connect 
together will drop, this will interfere with the operation of the second 
device. This applies to the ground wire just as much as to the 12v wire.

Think of bad hotel plumbing where the pipes are too small,  the guy in 
the next room flushes his bog and you get gurgling in your wash basin
