I have seen several hold, cancelled, not assigned statuses on the FAA site in 
the past.  They don't do a great job keeping the site updated when changes are 
taking place with an N number.  Call the registration branch and ask what the 
real deal with the number is.

The people in the registration branch are surprisingly helpfull for government 
employees, but it does take forever to get through to them on the phone.  It is 
like calling in to will a million dollars on the radio.  I think there are only 
two of them on the phones in that office.
