Unlike "old-timey" wheel bearings that you might have had on the front of 
your old Beetle, the bearings we usually use on KRs are a sort of 
self-contained cartridge, where the races are built into the bearing, and 
are replaced when the bearing itself is replaced.  Given that, you can see 
how the whole cartridge could spin on the axle, chewing it up in the 
process.
