The advantages of an in flight adjustable or a
constant speed propeller are generally seen as
the top speed of the aircraft increases. The
increase in speed makes the difference in the
desired blade pitch for takeoff and cruise
greater. A fixed pitch propeller is a compromise
between the two extremes. You must, however,
weigh the advantages of an adjustable propeller
against the cost, reliability, and any other
factors that come to bare. An adjustable
propeller would, in theory, give you a shorter
takeoff roll, a better climb rate, and a higher cruise speed, but at what cost?
