I think the premise is a leak proof battery - and of course weight is ALWAYS an issue. WW recommendation "works" for both of these under this premise. I am a fan of LiPo - but the challenge of charging and discharging safely is parmount. I think EarthX focuses on this - as well as the Tesla cars... There are some cheapo LiPo that have no safety built into them.
Battery technology continues to improve - heck, I hope one day we can have electric planes! (I am not a "tree hugger" - I just realize the power and reliability improvement that electric has over combustion. Ever drive a Tesla? Impressive!) To your point - yes - having availability of parts if you break down is important - but better to use quality and reliable parts to reduce this concern. Focus more on safety and reliability than cheap and avaiable. In 30+ years of flying I have never had a battery leave me stranded. For the VW, the Lawn and Tractor type battery works fine for me. There are lots of options out there. The basic lawn and tractor battery is probably the least expensive, and easy to find a replacement for when traveling. It's a battery that can be mounted in any position. It is smaller than a regular lead acid batteries, and safer, more reliable and powerful. It has none of the quirks of a lithium battery.
