Dick Kohler demonstrates on a EAA video "Hints for Homebuilders" for changing tires. He shows putting just enough air in the tube to give it shape but not stretch the rubber. Dust the tube with Talcum powder. Assemble the wheel halves without worry about pinching the tube. The partially inflated tube keeps itself out of the "jaws" of the wheel halves as they come together. Talcum powder allows the tube to slide to equalize uniform stretching inside the tire during full inflation.

I demonstrated that hint at a Gathering Larry hosted one year off-site from Mt. Vernon.

This subject will be a good camp fire discussion at the Gathering. How
many more days???????

These are the tires I ran on the KR 211LF for 20 yeas and 800 hours and
600x6 on the Tripacer

My operating weight was generally 1100 pounds +/-. I would inflate them
to 25 pounds during the annual inspection and seldom added air between
annuals. They would loose as much as 10 pounds between annuals but if
they still looked round I never checked the pressure. I have run them as
low as 15 pounds with any issues. I don't know if it was the tires,
technique, or luck but I never had a flat during operation in the 1300
combined hours with the Tripacer and KR or the total 1700+ hours of
flight time in the 50+ years of flying. The only flat tire I can recall
having was when installing a new set on the Tripacer and I pinched the
tube in tire #1 and it went flat before I finished changing tire #2.
Use enough powder on the tube and make sure you hear a metal to metal
"click" when mating the two wheel halves.

The only flats I ever experienced was with a pneumatic tailwheel and
that issue was corrected by putting tire patch glue on the wheel bead
and tire bead to keep the tire from slipping on the wheel and pinching
the tube.

As always, YRMV................
