Yes-there is no reason to include the fax line throuh the switching cabinet
unless there would ever be a need to share line as an outgoing voice line.

I have several reasons for running a fax line through the system unit:
1.  Accounting
2. Ability to reassign the fax line to a different location via programming (often remotely), rather than having to be on-site. 3. Ability to use the fax line for other purposes (e.g. outgoing voice line). 4. Ability to share one fax line, even if several users send faxes from their desktop machines. Only one ext should ring, however.

I agree that modems hate the multiple A/D conversions that occur with a digital system unit, but I haven't had trouble with FAX machines unless the lines are marginal to begin with.

By the way, have you tried putting a POTS phone on the XDP port to see if you can get dial tone? Could be as simple as a bad pair! (If you already said so, sorry - I missed it.)
