Phil,

Sounds like you have an intermittent short on the data (yellow, black) pair
of one of the stations.

On the 624, a direct short on a data pair will cause the system to shut
down - a momentary short can make the system reset and appear to shut down
for a minute - a very slight short can cause problems only during "Higher
Voltage" transmission ( ** such as the 60-95 volts sent to the slt for as
ring generator **)- this causes the "Pre-Tripping" during the first ring -
like your getting

check for the following...ask about any other contractor type of work that
was recently done at the site. - water leaks/damage, dirty jacks, water
damage and corrosion at the jack. (splashing water into a jack next to a
plant while watering the plant is very common in the residential install.)-
carpet installers might sometimes partially cut into a wire with their
razors. staples that go through the cable instead of around it during
installation -etc...

Your best way to attack this problem is if you can make the problem
happen. ----at the ksu - disconnect all station plugs (make sure to label
them first) and then call in from a cell phone or fax machine. while the
caller is getting ringing, start plugging in the stations one at a time
until the problem or cut off occurs. this will tell you which cable run is
your problem. the problem/short could be in the cable, the jack or sometimes
the actual phone. usually you will find a dirty or corroded jack or a bad
modular crimp for this location.

while troubleshooting the problem the first time, you might have played or
jiggled the wires at the ksu - this might have temporarily fixed the problem
dumping the data might not have been what fixed it . While touching and
jiggling the wires or simply removing the cover to the 624, letting the
cables move around slightly or stuffing them back down when replacing the
cover, you might have de-aggravated the short if it was a bad modular crimp.

***when buying your modular plugs for crimping - keep in mind that there
are two different types - 1 type for solid wire and another for stranded
wire - using the wrong plug can cause bad connections and cause "WEIRD
PROBLEMS"*** also make sure to always use a good crimp tool (this means
spending more than $3.99 at Radio Shack) - also try to mount any
surface-mounted jacks facing sideways or facing down, which usually helps to
prevent dirt or water from getting into the jack.

Good luck and let me know what you find - JOEL WEISER
