I'm finally, and belatedly making a contribution to this thread. In a
charity shop a few weeks ago I found half a shelf of books by the same author -
medieval mysteries each priced at 40p. I took a chance a bought the lot, eleven
in all for 4.40GBP - less than the price of a single paperback. I'm enjoying
them all:-

A.E. Marston The Wolves of Savernake
                                           The Ravens of Blackwater
                                           The Dragons of Archenfeld
                                           The Lions of the north
                                           The Serpents of Harpledown
                                           The Stallions of Woodstock
                                           The Hawkes of Delamere
                                           The Wildcats of Exeter
                                           The Foxes of Warwick
                                           The owls of Gloucester
The publication date of the lasr is 2000 and so there may be more.

Edward Marston is described as a former history lecturer and I assume his
historical details are correct. All books are based on incidents in the Doomsday
Book and involve a group of men sent by the king to investigate
irregularities and property disputes in different parts of England. So far as I have
read
they all begin with a prologue involving a death which then impinges on the
Domesday Commissioners who inevitably arrive just after the death., If you
enjoy Ellis Peters books you will probably enjoy these.
