(as a reply to "Fishing")  Even though one of my sisters has 
a housemate with multiple allergies, this is the only reply 
I've gotten so far:

Lard or suet would make much nicer cookies than "vegetable shortening".  
(I regard Crisco as an excellent hand cleaner that should never be taken
internally.)

Once upon a May, I had to make brownies and there was no butter in the
house.  I substituted hazelnut oil, and they came out *superb*.  I imagine
that walnut oil, which is easier to come by, would do as well, but it would
be harder to detect under the chocolate.  Sesame oil would clash with
brownies, but might be nice in shortbread.
