Dear Helen,
Happy New Year Everyone!!
I highly recommend MedicAlert of Turlock, California, and I trust they do
work with people in Canada. I registered with them many years ago when they
first began. I became a diabetic at age 16. (I just turned 73). Upon
registering, one is assigned a number. That number, their toll-free
telephone number, and the most important medical condition is engraved on
the brack of the bracelet. My bracelet reads "Diabetes, Insulin pump, No
ace inhibitors, Bl. type A pos." I sent them a list of my medications and
other medical problems I have such as angina, kidney failure, high blood
pressure, etc. All this information is kept in their files and can be
accessed immediately by medical service or rescue squad calling their toll
free phone no.
The registration number is yours for life. I became rather careless, quit
wearing my bracelet, and had not contacted MedicAlert nor updated my medical
information for more than 20 years, . When I went on the insulin pump 3
years ago, I decided to find my bracelet and "fly-right" I phoned them,
gave them my number, and they immediately gave me my name and address.
I ordered a new bracelet with the expanding band - there used to be only one
kind, the bulky steel-chain type with the red caduceus. Go to their
web-site, www.medicalert.org and you can see all the lovely jewelry they
have and read more about them.
I highly recommend this organization. One can buy a medic-alert bracelet in
a drug store and other places. If you have an emergency, you may not be able
to relay your condition, allergies, etc. to those trying to help you. I am
a Registered Nurse and "know that for which I speak."
Happy lacemaking,
Betty Ann Rice, in Roanoke, VA USA

Subject: [lace-chat] Medic Alert Products
Hi,
I am needing to look at getting a medic alert bracelet. Does anyone on
the list have experience of these products and the associated services?
Are there alternatives? I would like to get something that alerts the
medical authorities if/when required but would be an attractive piece of
jewelry to everybody else - not much to ask, surely?! Any views,
opinions, personal experiences, etc would be appreciated ...
