This is the information taken from "Peasant and erudite arts and textiles in Spain" APECYL 1999, about mac-rame:

The name of "mac-rame" is arabic in origin and means "knot". The knots are made with hands and it is originated by the Assyrian people.
Macrame had been worked by all Spanish communities since 15th. to 17th. centuries, over all in Castilla and Leon.
The "arabesques" were the main design and they have been found many pieces worked with this technique for church purposes. During the 18th., 19th. and 20th. centuries, one of the more extended uses for macrame was that of towel fringes.

Janice, I've been told by a woman here who teaches Romanian Point

Lace that, in Europe, the name for this type of needle lace based on a crochet cord *is* macrame. <<<

That's also what it's called in Anna magazine, a European needlework &
crafts magazine. Or macrame crochet.
