In addition to the excellent advice already posted, if all else fails and
there is a place nearby that does colour photocopying - get a colour
photocopy done of your lace, and scan the copy for the image you want to
post on the web. The colour scanners have good lenses and often the colour
copies look just like the real thing. Shadows don't seem to be much of a
problem if there is an appropriate background - navy or light blue is
usually good.

Lightly stitch your lace to a background fabric, and afix that to paper or
light card in some unobtrusive way so that the clerk can place it readily
onto the copier bed. Your second generation image can then be scanned at a
low resolution for posting to the web. Plus you have a paper record of your
lace, if you are going to give it away :)
