This is a good tip from a DH:

For Sue, I also meant to say that the time release on the digital camera is
handy if you want to use available light, and turn off the automatic flash.
Might take a few tries to see where the best angle for the camera position
would be  and make sure that curious pets will not disturb the set-up.

I found a cheapie desktop tripod in the gadget bin at a camera store - but
being cheapie it tends to fall over when the camera is mounted on it. so,
when I want to use the time release, I wedge the camera against something
stable.

If one does have a drill press stand handy, these are incredibly stable!
