Since BSE in cattle, there are strict rules on the disposal of beef bones
(The Beef Bones (Amendment) (England) Regulations 1999 (the Amendment
Regulations), so this is probably what they are referring to, as most bone
bobbins are made from beef bones. Old bone bobbins would have been made from
bones from cattle slaughtered long before BSE, but this probably isn't taken
into account when applying restrictions. I believe that those who make bone
lace bobbins now use bone imported from outside the UK at least (if not
outside the EU). In fact I know that at least one maker states that his bone
is sourced from outside the UK.
If it's thought these might be ivory, then there will also be restrictions -
anything ivory has to have papers to prove that the item was manufactured
before 1st June 1947 before it can be sold within, imported or exported
to/from the UK or EU.

<Lots 1159 and 1160 are large amounts of spangled bone bobbins. There is a
comment: "Please note there are export restrictions on this lot outside the
EU." First I've heard of restrictions. Does anyone know more about bone
items presenting a problem? When I buy bobbins during travels, I simply
list
them as handcrafts. Never had a problem. Know dealers send new ones to
lace
days in the U.S.>
