The general rule of thumb is the same with crochet and knitting. You start with a hook or needle that is the same diameter of the thread or yarn, and go from there (depending upon firmer or looser fabric, user's technique, etc.) If you love Clover Soft Touch hooks, then you haven't lived until you have tried TULIP ETIMO CROCHET HOOKS (Japanese, but dist. by Caron, west side of the pond).
You will throw your Clover Soft Touch in the garbage...really. The Tulip Etimo are fairly available now: eBay, online shops (very few local shops) and places like JoAnn Fabrics often has coupons for 50% off. They are also endorsed by Doris Chan, a well-known crochet expert/designer. You can get the small steel in a set, and another in the larger aluminum. They often include decent quality scissors, ruler and tapestry needles. There are sizes in the mid-range between the two size ranges, that you can buy individually. As far as compatibility (Hook to Thread Size), you can google it.
