The general rule of thumb is the same with crochet and knitting.
You start
with a hook or needle that is the same diameter of the thread or yarn, and go
from there (depending upon firmer or looser fabric, user's technique, etc.)
If you love Clover Soft Touch hooks, then you haven't lived until you have
tried
TULIP ETIMO CROCHET HOOKS (Japanese, but dist. by Caron, west side of
the pond).  

You will throw your Clover Soft Touch in the garbage...really.
The Tulip Etimo are fairly available now: eBay, online shops (very few local
shops) and places like JoAnn Fabrics often has coupons for 50% off.
They are
also endorsed by Doris Chan, a well-known crochet expert/designer.
You can get
the small steel in a set, and another in the larger aluminum.  They often
include decent quality scissors, ruler and tapestry needles.  

There are
sizes in the mid-range between the two size ranges, that you can buy
individually.

As far as compatibility (Hook to Thread Size), you can google
