I guess I started a bit of something and then had to be gone a couple of days
with life suddenly becoming more "eventful."
Without getting too detailed, I was pronouncing Arachne the same as I pronounce
"arachnid" which is in essence with two "soft a's" (which used to be
illustrated with a modified "u" over the top...in the old days at least). <S>
The head of the local Lace Society pronounced the second "a" with what I call a
hard (or harder "a") which would be with a dash/hyphen over the top, or some
modified version of it.
I also asked about learning various lace techniques and mentioned a few,
stating I only knew lace in knitting, crochet, tatting and some bobbin lace and
her comment was that if I knew bobbin lace that was all there was to know as
all the other forms of lace were based upon them. I find that hard to believe
so pushed harder for various techniques, and then it came out that there was a
member or two that did a couple of the techniques I queried about.
It sounded like there was awareness of the Arachne list, but I got no clear
response if people belonged, and then the amusement and correction over my
pronunciation of the name, (which may have been a deflective posturing), so I
would guess if they belong to the list they perhaps are not active. Let it
suffice to say that the group I called is in the US as I am not comfortable in
stating the precise location. <S>
Unfortunately there were no classes and it was suggested I just go get books
(which is how I typically learn anyway), but was curious about various bobbins
and techniques, refining things, etc.
I may show up just out of curiosity, as sometimes sharing one picks up things
that help the learning curve, but I was a bit surprised at the response I got.
I used to help a lot on knitting lists and find that people often laugh on the
side about people's questions. I am of the opinion that everyone has to start
somewhere and probably most start with little or no knowledge so there are no
stupid questions. Surely people get bored at hearing the same question over
and over when they have been on a list for years, which I understand.
Well, I do thank everyone for this list, as it is very beneficial in so many
ways. :-)
Best,
Susan Reishus
