So, this is a pretty lopsided way of seeing things; Identica is and probably will remain, by an order of magnitude or two, the largest installation of the software. It is the origin of the software, and somewhere north of 90% of the code has been written by me or people employed by my company, Control Yourself, Inc. Identica has received lots of industry and online press; about 10-20x more than Laconica. One of the things I noticed while working on MediaWiki was how many people got confused by the names. "I want to set up a Wikipedia about sailboats," someone would say, and they'd get immediately corrected: "You really want a wiki about sailboats. You have to set up an instance of MediaWiki to create that wiki. It will be like Wikipedia, but it won't be 'a Wikipedia'." I think that's kind of a lot of nitpicking that throws people off. I'd like people to be able to say, "I want an Identica for my softball team," and everyone just knows what they mean. My original reason to keep these two names separate was selfish; I didn't want to dilute the value of the Identica name by letting everybody use it. I now think that that was a mistake, and that it will help Laconica spread if we use the same name. Any publicity for Identica-the-site becomes publicity for Identica-the-software. -Evan
