Another data point.  The rge driver also fails for the Gigabyte Corp
desktop board model X38-DQ6, which is the high end board
for the Intel X38 chipset, and also uses the Realtek 8111b NICs.
Same symptoms.  On boot, the interface plumbs, the driver is attached,
but connections can not be made.

I wonder if there is a third example system or laptop model that people
are having trouble with?   I will forward this thread to the RGE nic 
engineer.
