That sounds like kdmconfig and Xsun - you should probably be
using Xorg instead. (The mentioned workaround for the hanging
bug won't help with Xsun for instance.)
When you run kdmconfig, the first question should be Xorg or Xsun.
Also is it truly hanging or just not drawing on the screen?
The 4000-series won't draw to the display in X unless you
provide an Xorg.conf that specifies to use it instead of the
VGA or DVI ports.
