ATI blocked release of the open source driver for the X1000 and later
chipsets - it's only in the last month that the open source community
has reverse engineered enough to start providing an experimental driver
for them - in a few more months this may approach something we can
consider incorporating into Solaris, but until then, for new laptops,
nvidia or Intel graphics are your best bet.
