I switched from running Windows Vista on my HP DV8310US to OpenSolaris a couple of weeks ago. Overall, I'm very happy with it. I did notice that with 1GB DDR installed, I perceived its performance to be faster than Vista, though not exceptionally fast. Moving the laptop up to 2GB DDR total installed seems to have improved the responsiveness even more. System Monitor, though, shows that 1.7GB of 2.0GB memory is in use at nearly all times, and there's about 90MB of swap space used. My CPU utilization when just doing web browsing and whatnot with Firefox is in the 5-11% range. I can't compare the performance of OpenSolaris 2008.11 with any other unix-ish OS on this laptop, but the bump from 1GB to 2GB RAM made a noticeable difference in responsiveness. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
