gtk2 uses pango which is a rather high level font rendering lib. gtk1 was almost X level and therefore fast but lacks a lot of unicode specials. OTOH SynEdit needs some fast and simple text functions. Maybe cairo is the solution. Sebastian is already working on this.
Just wondering, how is GEdit implemented, isnt with GTK2? Maybe could help in this SynEdit issue...
