Geoff,

in short, if I read your information correctly, what you have is this:

10.40.1.58=primary->vsw0->e1000g0->switch1->vlan1
10.40.1.90=guest->vsw1->e1000g1->switch2->vlan2

your defaultrouter is 10.40.1.94

there is no obvious network connection between primary and guest.
you don't mention to which of the two vlans defaultrouter is connected.

your setup seems to be ok, provided that you don't want primary and 
guest to communicate.  Your ping from guest to defaultrouter will fail 
unless defaultrouter has a connection to vlan2

perhaps if you explore in this direction, you'll find an answer.
