I just looked at RC3. The name of the initrd file is now being taken from syslinux.cfg. (It actually extracts if from /proc/cmdline.) This means that the name of the initrd file can be changed if necessary. For the record, here is how the backup for initrd works. 1. Create a gzipped tar file of all the files for the package. (Same as all other packages) 2. Create another ram disk of 1500 k. 3. Extract the gzipped tar file to the new ram disk. 4. dd the ram disk into a disk image and gzip it. 5. Delete the ram disk.
