Option 1: Get someone to sponser domain registration in purchasable "chunks". I'd be willing to sponser a year, and there are likely others who would do the same.

I think a donation pool would work pretty well...we could solicit for folks to commit to a share of the registration fee (maybe $5-10 US). Once we see how many folks commit over a given time period (a few weeks or month), we'd see how long it makes sense to register for and let everyone know what their share of the cost would be.
I'd suggest simply trying to get small donations from folks via the user list, but I don't think there's much of a practical method to do anything with any money left over (likely not enough to fund any serious development work, but we probably don't need the domain registered for 50 years or something either).
You are right, most probably there will not be enough funds for serious work, but probably enough for a 50 years subscription :-
What amount are we talking about, 50-100 bucks/year?
The company I am working for considers (after a nice little tap on the forehead with a sledgehammer) to use LEAF boxes as firewalls for a new project. If this should turn into reality they would probably save enough this way to be in a very comfortable position for a sponsorship. Mabe a logo on the respective page would do fine? I will try to knock on a few doors.
