This is somewhat different, I'm not saying that we should use gzip for initramfs, but that currently it's a advantage that we do that with kernel 2.4 and initrd (only gzip instead of gzip and cpio). But if we move to kernel 2.6 and initramfs we better stay with what the kernel provides instead of making our own patches :-)
