i've used eigerstein (which i am completely happy with) and dachstein cd (which i'm even more happy with).
the docs for dachstein cd say that it's not for LRP newbies, but honestly, i didn't see much that was more complicated than eigerstein. the worst i can say about dachstein cd is that the network configure section wasn't as easy to parse/understand as eigerstein with the seawall firewall. but with the help of this excellent list, i eventually got there with a minimum of heartache. honestly, unless you don't have a cd, i think dachstein cd is the way to go. storing everything you need on cd is an awfully powerful argument for a distribution where people worry about how full the floppy is getting. having to wonder whether "tcpdump" will fit or not just doesn't even enter your mind. the only reason i can think of for NOT using dachstein cd is something along the lines of: "my older LRP system works great. i'm happy with what i got" the documentation for dachstein cd is a bit on the sparse side, but it was enough for this LRP newbie to get by. if you never used linux before, prepare yourself for alot of reading. pete begin [EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Hello. > > I am fairly new to Linux and would like to implement a Linux based router / firewall >on my > home network. > > My purpose is not just to have a powerful router and secure firewall, but I am also > wanting to learn along the way (so I am not necessarily looking for the simplest >choice). > > My question is which version / flavor of LRP should I use?
