Your right, your going to have to back up the root package.
To my understanding, your going to have to backup root with a
full backup rather than a partial. I may be wrong thought on the
necessary full-backup requirement of root.

The squid package should also work on Dachstein.
There was a thread around 3-4 weeks ago about running Squid
on Oxygen, if I remember right.
