Thank you.  That sparked an idea which I think will be a reasonable
compromise for my needs.  What I just did was to add a second link
immediately after the "real" link.  E.g.

  <a href=http://209.142.160.132:8888/whatever>whatever</a><a
href=http://192.168.1.10:8888/whatever>.</a>

so that the more obvious link description will be used by visitors to
the external site, yet I can get to the external site from the internal
machine and click on the little dot (".") rather than on the more
obvious link ("whatever").

I fear I will need to do it too often for that to be convenient.
