I am using the openssh client on a Linux box (RH 7.1).  I, too, have
seen the client fail to terminate when some process remains open
(for example, an X window) but my ssh client process did terminate.
I was careful to close all X windows and terminate all background
processes.  After I logged out, I got the following message:
"Connection to euler.math.pitt.edu closed."

That is why I was surprised to see the "reset by peer" message.
