Hi Brad: I have tried configuring ntpclient and the package to from size 9979 to 1575. I did try this on another box with more ram with same kind of results. I need to change the RCDLINKS change 20's to 25's and TIME to myntpserver address. The rcdlinks need to change because the ppp is not up before it is needed. As it is now just times out doing dns lookup. I tried updating updatetime() in /etc/cron.daily/multicron-d before doing and change to the package and that seems to work. So at least I can fall back to that way for obtaining ntp data, just not clean.
I will checkout David's ntpclient and the one in the cvs that you mentioned.
