Ok, I was attempting to remember...... I used to have WinZip, SuperZip,
or some other zip program from around 1996 that would rw tar files, 
I just figured that it was built in WinZip with its popularity. As
pointed out by others, WinZip doesn't support tar but other Zip
programs do; this still sounds like the easiest workaround short of
Cygwin. 

I guess I should have kept my mouth shut, I haven't had a Win Desktop
for over 2 years now and my wife doesn't care much for me using her
box .....<rant> stupid, stupid machine </rant>. The SuSE "liveval" CD's 
have kept me pacified when there isn't another option.  ;-)~~~~
