Maybe you could add a comment to http://www.scyld.com/expert/100mbps.html#intel or a link to sourceforge http://sourceforge.net/projects/e1000 on where to find the e1000 drivers. BTW: As Greg already pointed out, the driver is included in the upcoming release of the 2.4 kernel. rc3 contains v4.4.12-k1 whereas on sourceforge you can find v4.4.12. A quick look at e1000_main.c showed, that this file from rc3 contains a Changelog entry for version 4.4.12, which is missing in the sourceforge tar-ball. I haven't checked any further, but maybe there are some other differences too.
